D a n n y L ip fo r d s a y s : You can tile over a tile
floor if it’s in good condition and doesn’t have
any major cracks or evidence of settling. The
floor needs to be cleaned thoroughly, and any
loose tiles should be attached before laying the
new tile with thin-set mortar.
Tile can also be applied over a vinyl floor
that’s in good shape and glued securely to a
concrete slab. The floor should be scrubbed
first to remove any dirt and grease. If the vinyl
was applied over a wood subfloor, a thin rigid
sheet known as cement backerboard needs
to be installed first, using corrosion-resistant
screw s driven into the floor joists.
Since the tile will raise the height of your
floor, the bottom of your doors may need to be
trimmed to fit. In a bathroom, the toilet also
must be removed before installing new tile.
You’ll need new bolts to hold the toilet down if
the originals aren’t long enough.
